French Department Awards

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Major Keith W.A. MacDougall Memorial Bursary*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A bursary will be awarded annually to a deserving undergraduate student in need of assistance who is majoring in French and who is interested in continuing studies in the field.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of French; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

 

Grace and Harry Hickman Scholarship*

Scholarships will be awarded to assist students to study French at a university in any region or country where French is the dominant language and where an immersive language and cultural experience is present. Applicants must be registered in a full time program, including at least one course in French, at the University of Victoria, and intend to study at a university where the language of instruction is French for one or more semesters and to return to the University of Victoria to complete the program requirements. The scholarship will be paid upon receipt of documents demonstrating the student’s registration at an acceptable institution. Students in any year of study are eligible. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards on upon the recommendation of the Department of French.

Written applications, including details of the proposed program, are to be submitted to the Department of French by April 1 of the academic year preceding the proposed study at another institution.

Myrna McEwen Daniels Scholarship*

Four or more scholarships of a minimum of $2,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering second year in the Department of French. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need. The Department of French will nominate the recipients.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of French.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Adeline Julienne Deloume Memorial Scholarship*

Value: $300 | Number: Varies

Two scholarships of $300 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students of different genders who attain the highest grades in French in their first year and who intend to continue studies in French. Additional scholarships may be presented to students in the Major and Honours programs up to a total of $2500.

Alliance Francaise De Victoria Book Prize in Memory of Dr. W. D. Witherspoon*

A book prize is awarded to a student graduating with a Major in French. The prize is made possible through donations from members of the Alliance Francaise de Victoria.

Constance Ann Pettit Scholarship*

Value: $1,000 | Number: Varies

Scholarships of at least $1,000 each will be awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering third or fourth year in a major or honours program in the Department of French. Nominations are to be made by the Department of French.

Didier Bergeret Scholarship*

Value: $1,000 | Number: Varies

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 each will be awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in a Major or Honours program in the Department of French.

Katharine Youdall Memorial Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded by the Canadian Federation of University Women Victoria to an outstanding woman student entering the third or fourth year of a Major or Honours program in French.

Madame Berangere Steel Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students in the second year French composition courses who are proceeding towards a Majors or Honours degree in French.
