Salmon Climate Impacts Portal
Climate change is affecting freshwater environments within which salmon ecosystems are found. The Salmon Climate Impacts Portal provides information about the impacts of climate change on freshwater environments in British Columbia (BC). Using data from six global climate models, this tool provides a regional overview of potential changes to various streamflow and water temperature hazards within the BC coastal domain.
With the Salmon Climate Impacts Portal, users can:
- Visualize and download data describing projected changes to 10 streamflow and water temperature hazard indices at yearly, monthly, and daily resolutions
- Choose data from one of six global climate models
- Explore changes based on two different greenhouse gas emissions scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) and four time periods (historical, 2020s, 2050s, and 2080s)
- Select a region of interest by watershed group, salmon conservation unit or custom outlet location
- Visualize maps, generate summary plots, and download summary data
Intended users
This tool is designed to serve the needs of technical and scientific users who require climate change information for salmon environmental impacts and vulnerability studies. It may also be of interest to a broad range of users involved in the management of fisheries, water resources, and ecosystem health.

About the data
The Salmon Climate Impacts Portal uses data from the VIC-GL hydrologic model coupled to the dynWat streamflow and water temperature model. This data is driven by BCCAQv2 downscaled climate model output from the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5).
When referring to the Salmon Climate Impacts Portal data produced by PCIC, whether retrieved from this website or found otherwise, the source must be clearly stated. For the most recently released data, the following citation is recommended:
