Regional climate impacts

The Regional Climate Impacts research theme is focused on improving access to future climate projections and indices of extremes, and helping users apply this information to assess possible impacts and risks of climate change. We regularly update our historical climate data and improve our methods for downscaling climate models – investing significant effort to maintain and strengthen our capabilities in these areas. Recently, our work has focused on collaborating with users to create regional and sector-specific impact assessments, supporting the use of climate projections in building design, and reducing barriers to climate action through user education and practical guidance.

Objectives

  • Downscaling—derive fine-scale climate information from global climate model ensembles using a variety of methods, over both BC and the rest of Canada.
  • Variability and extremes—analyze projected future climate change in the context of historical climate and its variability, including the frequency and intensity of extremes.
  • Impactsengage with a variety of users and stakeholders to anticipate possible impacts of projected climate change in their region.
