Top newsmakers of 2020
2020 was like no other—and the UVic community kept doing what we do best. Here are just a few of the many stories that helped shape a year of news.
Law for all
The Law Centre offers a critical service to a vulnerable segment of society, and at its heart is a robust student clinical program. The team of dedicated staff and capable law students forms one of the best legal clinics in the country.
New book focuses on field schools
New book gathers expertise of UVic field school instructors to learn from—and extend—off-campus teaching opportunities
Spring 2018 Convocation
Thousands of UVic students and their families and friends will gather on campus this June to celebrate the achievement of an academic milestone. During Spring Convocation from June 11-15, ceremonies will be held to confer 3,776 degrees, diplomas and certificates. Congratulations, grads!
Father-in-law: Will McClary
Law school can be stressful. And hard. Add to that becoming a new father during your second year and you've got a big challenge on your hands. Will McClary took on that challenge, and because of the support he received at UVic Law, he took it in stride. Then he added an executive role on the board of the Law Student Society (LSS).
Co-op Students of the Year
Collaborative, innovative and driven to make a positive impact—these are qualities shared by the three 2017 Co-op Students of the Year: Miaoxin (Cheryl) Cui (business), Brianna Carrels (biomedical engineering) and Gabrielle (Ga) Grant (law).
Trudeau Scholar tackles First Nations land claims process
Ryan Beaton is not your typical law student. He likes to stir things up and ask the big questions no one else wants to ask, like "Why are we doing it this way?" and "Is this really working?" His approach can make him unpopular in a room full of lawyers, but right at home in academia.
EU field school
Students from the humanities, social sciences, fine arts and law—now back in Victoria after a transformative trip overseas and also in Winnipeg—came together for a powerful and challenging field school that brought them to historic sites in Europe and taught them valuable lessons about Canada.
Indigenous law graduate student wins top Canadian research award
UVic Law PhD student Aaron Mills was awarded the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Talent award. The award is given to a single student each year across all the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences in Canada whose research "brings forward ideas that help us understand and improve the world around us." Mills' work is at the forefront of the movement to restore and revitalize Indigenous systems of law.
A passion for public service
Summarizing and reviewing court transcripts for the defence. Analyzing evidence and disclosure from the prosecution to the defence. This might seem like a typical day of work for a law intern, but when you’re doing it at The Hague’s International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, it’s anything but normal.
An international career path in law
Anna Beatch doesn’t like to plan too far ahead, and that feeds her thirst for adventure. She likes a challenge, which is why she chose UVic Law after receiving her undergrad commerce and business law degree from the University of Alberta. “I wanted to challenge myself and push my boundaries,” says Beatch. “I also chose UVic Law because of the co-op program.”
Law grad follows quest for knowledge
After her first year of university, Jan Clark decided maybe school wasn’t for her. But that’s not the end of this story: her CV now boasts an alphabet of academic credentials after her name.
Backhouse: Top law grad
This summer, Diana Backhouse, recipient of the 2008/09 Law Society Gold Medal and Prize for top GPA, plans to gain a new perspective on litigation. Through a position with the Ontario Court of Appeal, Backhouse will get the opportunity to work directly for a judge summarizing trial information from lower courts, sitting in on hearings and watching litigators in action.
