UVic Librarians - Statement of Commitment
Introduction
Librarians, archivists and PEA staff at the University of Victoria Libraries recognize the importance of open access to content creators and researchers in fostering new ideas, creating knowledge and ensuring that it is available as widely as possible. UVic librarians, archivists and PEA staff adopt a statement of commitment which would ensure our research is disseminated as widely as possible and available in perpetuity through deposit in the University's digital repository, UVicSpace.
Statement of Commitment
Librarians, archivists and PEA staff at University of Victoria Libraries commit to making the best possible effort to publish in venues providing unrestricted public access to their works. They will endeavour to secure the right to self-archive their published materials, and will deposit these works in UVicSpace. The University of Victoria librarians, archivists and PEA staff grant University of Victoria Libraries the non-exclusive, worldwide license to make their scholarly publications accessible through self-archiving in the UVicSpace, subject to copyright restrictions.
Guidelines
This statement of commitment applies to all scholarly and professional work produced by librarians, archivists and PEA staff, University of Victoria Libraries, as of the date of the adoption of this statement of commitment. Retrospective deposit is also encouraged. Co-authored works should be included with the permission of the other author(s). Examples of works included:
- Scholarly and professional articles
- Substantive presentations, including ppt slides and text, images and handouts, etc.
- Book/book chapters
- Reports (e.g. study leave reports, annual reports)
Works should be deposited in UVicSpace as soon as is possible, recognizing that some publishers may impose an embargo period.
This statement of commitment is effective as of January 1, 2012 and will be assessed a year after implementation. The Libraries Scholarly Communications Office will be responsible for providing detailed guidelines on the submission process and for undertaking the one year review.
Membership as defined in: Framework Agreement, Section 2.13 - “Librarian” means a person holding a Regular Librarian Appointment (probationary or confirmed) or Limited Term appointment as a Librarian and includes an Archivist, each of whom is represented by the Faculty Association.
