Emeritus Professor Donovan Waters receives Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Trust and Estate Professionals

On September 8, Emeritus Professor Donovan Waters QC received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Trust and Estate Professionals in London, England. STEP is truly international, with more than 20,000 members worldwide. The award is fitting recognition for one who is recognized as a leading authority on trust throughout the Common Law world – and indeed beyond: his attention to the Quebec trust has long been respected by Civil-Law scholars in Quebec. With his collaborators (including his UVic colleague Professor Mark Gillen), Professor Waters is now working on the fifth edition of his major text, Waters’ Law of Trusts in Canada.

The citation from the event reads as follows:

"Our second Lifetime Achievement Award goes to a leading international expert in trust law. He was a Canadian delegate to The Hague Conference on Private International Law in the 1980s for the Trusts Convention, and was also rapporteur for the Succession Law Convention at The Hague.  He has worked tirelessly in Canada to modernize trust law, working with the Ontario Law Reform Commission, the BC Law Institute Project to Modernize the Trustee Act, and the Uniform Law Conference of Canada Uniform Trustee Act project.  He continues to support jurisdictions considering implementation of the Uniform Act.  His text is the “go to” book for Canadian trust law, and a large percentage of trust law cases decided in Canada will quote from this text. He continues to speak at events in Canada and around the world, and is sought out for advice for his breadth of knowledge in the sector."
