The Indigenous Student Mini-University Summer Camp is hosted annually by the Office of Indigenous Academic and Community Engagement (IACE) at the University of Victoria (UVic). This transformative initiative is designed specifically for Indigenous students in grades 9 to 12 residing in British Columbia, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. Taking place over a week, this program is a comprehensive introduction to student life at the University of Victoria.

The Mini-University Summer Camp includes a large range of academic, physical, creative, cultural and social activities. This year’s camp features many specialized programming events. From STEM and biology workshops to a career and faculty fair, and more creative programs like drum-making and salve-making, there is something for every student to enjoy. Over the course of the week, students participate in sessions that nurture skills which can be applied both in and outside of university settings.

While workshops, programs, and activities are pillars of Mini-U, chaperones play a vital role in creating the ultimate camper experience. This year, 16 chaperones worked with campers to provide guidance, safety, and most importantly, fun. Supported by LE,NONET Student Leadership coordinator Lauren McLean, chaperones participated in week of preparatory sessions that included first aid and sexualized violence prevention training, as well as a criminal record check. The passion and care exemplified by Mini-U chaperones reflects the diligence with which the camper experience is curated. As leaders and role models from the UVic student body, chaperones provide a safe space for Mini-U participants to enjoy their time on campus to the fullest.

Mini-U 2025 concludes with an Honouring Ceremony attended by IACE staff, Elders, and community. Along with new friends and lifelong memories, participants from the Mini-University Summer Camp 2025 are equipped with skills to pursue post-secondary education.

If you are interest in becoming a chaperone, or know a student who would like to attend, visit the Mini-U webpage or contact the by LE,NONET Student Leadership coordinator laurennmclean@uvic.ca
