Destination UVic

Saturday, May 25, 2019

Join us for Destination UVic: a fun-filled event for undergraduate applicants and their families to get a taste of student life on campus at the University of Victoria. Speak with current UVic students, faculty-specific academic advisers, staff members, and future students who have the same questions as you:

  • What's it like living in residence?
  • What activities can I participate in?
  • Which courses should I choose, and how do I register?
  • How much should I budget for my first year?

We want you to see, hear and feel what it's like to be a UVic student, and there's no better time to find out!

Who should attend

  • Students who have applied to and/or been accepted into UVic undergraduate studies for September 2019.

Win a $500 or $1,000 tuition credit

Eligible attendees at Destination UVic can enter to win a tuition credit toward your first year at UVic: one of two $500 prizes or the grand prize of $1,000!

Pick up your ballot at the check-in and registration desk. The contest winner will be drawn on May 28, 2019.

Note: This contest is only open to residents of Canada, excluding Quebec. Refer to the terms and conditions at the bottom of this page for complete contest details and requirements.

Tours

Bring your walking shoes, because there's a lot of ground to cover at Destination UVic!

All tours are offered on a first-come-first-serve basis, and times are subject to change. We recommend checking in for a tour 10-15 minutes before it starts.

Campus tours

Duration: 90 minutes
Starting location: Student Union Building

Take a campus tour to get a better idea of where your faculty's buildings are located and see a classroom or two. On your tour, you'll be able to visit one of the following areas:

  • North campus (Business, Humanities, Social Sciences)
  • Southeast campus (Engineering, Science)
  • West campus (Education, Fine Arts, Human & Social Development)

In addition, every tour includes brief stops at some of our favourite spots:

  • Bus Loop & Campus Security
  • Campus Services Building
  • First Peoples House
  • McPherson Library
  • Quad & Petch Fountain
  • University Centre

Please note that it is not possible to enter every building (a full tour of campus would take hours!), but you are welcome to explore the buildings on your own throughout the day.

Campus tours are offered at the following times:

  • 9:45 - 11:15 a.m.
  • 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • 11:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.

  • 3:45 - 5:15 p.m.

Athletics & recreation tours

Duration: 30 minutes
Starting location: CARSA Building (lobby)

Visit the world-class Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA) to see our:

  • Dance, TRX, spin and yoga studios
  • Fitness and weight training areas
  • Multipurpose fieldhouse
  • Performance gym
  • Squash and racquetball courts

For many visitors, the highlight of the tour is our five-storey climbing wall!

Athletics & recreation tours are offered at the top of every hour, with the first tour starting at 10:00 a.m. and the last tour starting at 4:00 p.m.

First Peoples House tours

Duration: 30 minutes
Starting location: First Peoples House (front entrance)

The First Peoples House (FPH) is a social, cultural and academic centre for Indigenous students at UVic and serves as a safe and welcoming place that encourages the building of community.

On this tour, you'll see the Ceremonial Hall, curated art and student spaces that feature prominently in the FPH. At the same time, you'll learn about the local Nations, the significance of the building and its art, and the services it provides for Indigenous students.

We ask that all those who enter the First Peoples House do so with respect for the ancestors, the original care takers of this land, and for each other.

FPH tours are offered at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., and all Destination UVic attendees are welcome to participate. However, priority may be given to prospective Indigenous students.

Self-guided residence tours

Time: 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Starting location:
Cadboro Commons

If you're applying for residence, set aside time in your Destination UVic schedule for a self-guided tour of our neighbourhoods and communities:

Self-guided tours enable you to check out the rooms that are most important to you. Do you want to see everything we offer, or are you only interested in apartments and townhouses? Are you squeezing it in between other Destination UVic activities, or is residence your top priority?

Visit the Residence tent at Cadboro Commons to pick up a map, plan your tour route, and get your questions answered by UVic staff and current students. You'll also be able to download the map from this website (check back closer to the event).

Important note: you will only be able to visit buildings and rooms that have been prepared in advance for the self-guided tours. To ensure the security and privacy of students currently living in residence, access to other buildings is prohibited.

Plan your day in advance

Get a head start by building your own Destination UVic schedule. Don't forget to leave time for lunch, travel between locations, and a quick stop at the UVic Bookstore!
