Indigenous students
Indigenous ways of knowing, doing, and being connect deeply with the values of the School of Child & Youth Care. Our curriculum emphasizes decolonizing praxis and ethics, with all students taking CYC 250: Law, Indigenous People, and the TRC Calls to Action—building a shared foundation for understanding and connection.
BCYC Indigenous Specialization
Are you interested in focusing on child and youth care within Indigenous communities? The Indigenous Specialization stream introduces you to Indigenous knowledge, frameworks, and practices that prepare you for work in Indigenous contexts.
- Designed primarily for Indigenous students
- Open to non-Indigenous students with meaningful connections to Indigenous communities
Graduate Indigenous Land-Based Research Institute
From 2019 to 2020, faculty in the School of Child & Youth Care partnered with knowledge keepers from local W̱SÁNEĆ and T’Sou-ke territories to offer a unique Indigenous land- and water-based institute for graduate students.
The year-long institute included:
- Land-based learning and sharing circles
- Online communication and mentorship
- Editorial support for Indigenous graduate research
This work addressed the lack of Indigenous pedagogies and underrepresentation of Indigenous students in graduate studies. Two collaborative articles emerged:
- ȻENTOL TŦE TEṈEW̱ (Together with the Land): Part 1 – Indigenous Land- and Water-Based Pedagogies
- ȻENTOL TŦE TEṈEW̱ (Together with the Land): Part 2 – Indigenous Frontline Practice as Resurgence
Additional supports for Indigenous students:
- Office of Indigenous Academic & Community Engagement (IACE): Events, advising, and community connections, including the annual Indigenous Week of Welcome.
- First Peoples House: A dedicated space for gathering, reflection, and connecting with Old Ones and Elders.
