About us
At the UVic School of Child & Youth Care, we believe that care is not neutral—it’s political, relational and deeply powerful. Our work is grounded in the belief that every child and youth deserves to grow up in a world that values their voice, honours their identity and supports their well-being.
Whether you are a student, educator, practitioner or community partner, you’ll find a welcoming, forward-thinking community committed to building more equitable futures for children, youth, families and communities.

Our vision
To be a leader in child and youth care education, research, and practice that promotes social justice, decolonization, and collective well-being. We envision a world where children and youth are valued, safe, and supported to thrive—where communities are resourced, relationships are rooted in respect, and systems are reimagined through an equity lens.
Our mission
To educate practitioners and scholars who are grounded in relational, ethical, and socially responsive practice; to produce research that transforms policy, challenges injustice, and supports communities; and to engage meaningfully with partners in ways that are reciprocal, accountable, and culturally grounded.
Our core values
Justice & Equity
We are committed to anti-racism, decolonization, and challenging systemic oppression in all its forms.
Relational Practice
We center care, connection, and mutual accountability in all aspects of teaching, research, and community engagement.
Respect for Diverse Knowledges
We value multiple ways of knowing, including Indigenous, community-based, and lived-experience wisdom.
Collaboration & Community
We recognize that lasting change happens in relationships between students, partners, families, and the land.
Integrity & Accountability
We hold ourselves to high standards of honesty, ethical practice, and responsibility to those we serve.
CYC Student Society
The CYCSS is a supportive, student-run society dedicated to building community and promoting the CYC profession. Through shared experience, we help students feel more connected, empowered, and supported throughout their studies.
We meet bi-weekly to share stories, advice, and encouragement. Our quarterly social events offer time to relax, connect, and celebrate being part of the CYC community.
Our history
For over 40 years, we’ve been a national and international leader in the field of child and youth care. Our alumni are frontline practitioners, policymakers, educators and changemakers, working every day to build more just and caring communities.
