About Yu
Yu Yan is an assistant teaching professor in the department of computer science at UVic. She holds a doctoral degree in computer science from The University of Aizu in Japan.
Yu's research focuses on effective teaching and learning methods in STEM education, with an explicit interest in adaptive and personalised learning systems. Much of her work draws on affective engineering, machine learning, and fuzzy systems to identify and develop supporting tools for educators and students. Her background as an international student and researcher across China, Japan, and Canada informs her commitment to inclusive, culturally aware approaches to university education.
Outside of work, Yu enjoys running and hiking — interests that trace back to her days as a track and field athlete in primary school, and ones she credits with building the curiosity and resilience she brings to her work as an educator and researcher.
