About Sowmya
Sowmya Somanath is a Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) researcher in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Victoria (UVic). She co-leads the VIXI Lab and within it directs the Creative Experiences Lab.
Her primary research interest is in exploring how interactive technologies can foster creativity and wellbeing. Together with her students, she designs, develops, and evaluates novel systems that support people in creating artifacts, learning new skills, and improving their wellbeing. Projects from her group span different areas such as future of work, health, and tangible and physical computing.
Prior to joining UVic, she was an Assistant Professor at OCAD University in Toronto (2018–2020). She received her PhD in Computer Science from the University of Calgary in 2017.
