About Ashery
Ashery is an assistant professor of Computer science at the University of Victoria, where he heads the Medical Computer Vision (MCV) Lab. He earned his PhD from the University of Basel, Switzerland, under the supervision of Professor Heiko Schuldt and Professor Volker Roth, with a focus on medical image retrieval to augment diagnostic radiology. He also holds a master's degree from the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), Japan, and an undergraduate degree from the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), Tanzania.
Ashery's research applies computer vision, machine learning, and information retrieval methods to interpret medical images and associated clinical data, with the goal of augmenting clinicians' diagnostics and decision-making. Prior to joining UVic, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of British Columbia, where he focused on multimodal machine learning for cardiovascular disease intervention and management under the mentorship of Professor Roger Tam.
