About Simon

Simon Diemert is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. His work is focused on software engineering for security- and safety-critical software-intensive systems, especially those that depend on artificial intelligence (AI) as part of their control function(s). Simon studies methods used to analyze and assess these systems with the ultimate goal of deciding whether they can be deployed or operated in high-risk contexts. He is particularly interested in the assurance case method and in how generative AI can be used to aid in these decisions.

 Simon has experience as both a researcher and practitioner working in several industry sectors, including automotive, rail, health and medical devices, energy, and defence. In 2026, he completed a Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Victoria and holds previous degrees in computer science and software engineering. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Victoria, Simon was the Vice President of Engineering at Critical Systems Labs Inc., a Vancouver-based firm specializing in engineering for critical systems. Simon has been a licensed professional engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) since 2019. In 2022 he won EGBC's "Young Professional" award and in 2023 he was recognized as "Engineer of the Year" by the International System Safety Society.
