About Jaya
Jaya Prakash Champati is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, where he leads the Edge AI Lab. His research focuses on efficient device-centric AI, particularly hierarchical inference systems that distribute machine learning computation between edge devices and cloud infrastructure to reduce cost and energy consumption.
Before joining UVic, Jaya was a research assistant professor at IMDEA Networks Institute in Spain, where he was also a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) postdoctoral fellow. At KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, his postdoctoral work advanced the field of Age of Information analysis and optimization.
He earned his PhD in ECE from the University of Toronto in 2017, receiving the Doctoral Completion Award and the Paul Biringer Scholarship for his research on scheduling parallel processors, and holds an MTech degree from IIT Bombay.
Jaya's work has been recognized with a best paper award at the IEEE National Conference on Communications in India (2011). He also brings industry experience from Broadcom Communications, where he contributed to the development of the 4G LTE MAC layer.
