Elizabeth Borycki is the Director of the Social Dimensions of Health and Health and Society programs in the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Victoria. Elizabeth is also a Full Professor in the School of Health Information Science and Adjunct Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria.  Elizabeth received her PhD from the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto, a Masters degree from the University of Manitoba in geriatrics and community health nursing and an Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Lakehead University. Elizabeth joined the University of Victoria 12 years ago. Prior to coming to the University of Victoria, she spent over 15 years working in health care in varying management, clinical and health information technology, design and implementation roles.

Elizabeth’s work is respected by her colleagues and highly cited internationally in the field of health informatics (health care computing). She has published over 180 articles, book chapters and several books in the following areas: patient and health information technology safety; quality and usability; health information technology management and strategy; health information technology education; mobile, home health and wearable technology to support patient and citizen health.  She founded the International Medical Informatics Association Working Group focusing on Health Informatics for Patient Safety and she was the Scientific Program Committee Co-Chair for the 16th World Congress on Medical and Health Informatics in Hangzhou, China.  Elizabeth has held numerous academic leadership roles internationally.  She was appointed Academic Representative for Canada for Canada’s Health Informatics Association (2007-2013) and Vice President representing North America on the Board of Directors for the International Medical Informatics Association (2010–2013).  Elizabeth is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the International Medical Informatics Association as Vice President – Special Projects, where she is using her expertise to promote accreditation of medical and health informatics educational programs globally.

Her research and publications have led to her being elected to the International Medical Informatics Association International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics and one of the top 100 health informatics researchers in the world.  She has also been appointed to the American College of Medical Informatics for her contributions to the fields of biomedical and health informatics, and 2017 she was named one of the top 10 Women in Digital Health by Digital Health Canada.
