Undergraduate FAQ for returning students

How is year standing calculated?

Year standing is calculated by the number of completed academic units. Year standing does not include courses you are currently registered in or the number of years you have been a student at UVic.

Year 1 is fewer than 12 units.

Year 2 is between 12 and 26.5 units.

Year 3 is between 27 and 41.5 units.

Year 4 is 42 or more units.

Note: co-op work terms do not count towards year standing.

When can I register for the two required 400-level courses?

This depends on reaching the minimum year standing credit (42) and your registration email (including your "time ticket") that tells you when you can register. Be sure to register as soon as you can because these classes usually fill up quickly.

Summer Session (May-Aug) registration emails are sent in early March, with registration early to mid-March.

Winter Session (Sept-Dec, Jan-Apr) registration emails are sent in early June, with registration early to mid-June.

What if you don’t register for the 400-level courses on time?

Even though the department provides enough seats in the 400-level classes for all graduating students, space is limited. If spaces are not showing as available when you need to register, please contact Sara Woodland (woodlands@uvic.ca).

Sociology 400 level waitlists are managed centrally by Sara Woodland.  Students will be placed on the waitlist in the order that they have contacted Sara; however, priority registration will be given to students who are graduating in the term they are registering for.

What are the application requirements for the honours program?

To be eligible, you must be a declared sociology major with a minimum cumulative GPA of 6.00 in all sociology courses numbered at or above the 200 level, including at least one required methods course (i.e., 211, 271, 374, 376).

To calculate your honour’s application GPA, add your final grades for all sociology courses numbered 200 and above together (that must include at least one methods course) and divide by the number of courses. Do NOT include any non-sociology grades in your calculation.

Normally, students apply for honours near the end of their 3rd year. Applications are due on or before May 15.

For more information on the honours program, including the application form, see here.

Are there any research/volunteer opportunities for students?

Sometimes faculty have research or teaching interests that involve community associations, advocacy groups, and/or government agencies that involve either paid or volunteer opportunities for students. To learn more about any opportunities that exist, consult the department web page at: https://www.uvic.ca/socialsciences/sociology/info-for/teaching-assistants/index.php
