Best poster winner - Sarah McArthur!

Honours student Sarah McArthur won the prize for best poster at the Pacific Ecology and Evolution Conference in Bamfield the weekend of March 2 & 3.  Her poster title was "A four year study of terrestrial breeding bird populations in Yoho and Kootenay National Parks". Sarah works with Professor Brian Starzomski.

PhD Studentship in High-elevation and Coastal Biodiversity and Climate Change

The School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria (British Columbia, Canada) has an opening for a PhD student to join a collaborative team
studying the interior and high-elevation biodiversity of sites in the Great Bear Rainforest and the Coast Range of British Columbia. The successful PhD student
will be supervised by Brian Starzomski, in the School of Environmental Studies, University of Victoria.

Post-doctoral Associate in High-elevation and Coastal Biodiversity and Climate Change

The School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria (British Columbia, Canada) is searching for a post-doctoral associate to join a collaborative team studying the interior and high-elevation biodiversity of sites in the Great Bear Rainforest and the Coast Range of British Columbia. The successful post-doc will be supervised by Brian Starzomski, in the School of Environmental Studies, University of Victoria.

Graduate Fellowship in Energy Politics

This fellowship will support a student working with Dr. Karena Shaw on a research project examining conflicts over energy infrastructure projects in BC, with a particular focus on shale gas development and run of river hydroelectricity. The research requires a background in environmental politics and governance, public engagement in decision making, climate change mitigation policy, and/or the political ecology of energy systems.
The fellowship would provide two years of support for a student pursuing a Master’s degree in the School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria. For more information or to apply for the fellowship, please contact Dr. Shaw directly: shawk@uvic.ca.

Sara Spencer Award 2011 recipient

Five graduate students in the Social Sciences have been awarded research grants totalling $6,200 from the Sara Spencer Endowment. The awards, adjudicated by the Graduate Advisors of departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences, are designed to support applied research that focuses on Victoria’s Capital Regional District. The 2011 recipient for Environmental Studies is: Thiago Gomes, Environmental Studies, “Restoring the Gardens At K’djis, Chatham Islands” ($2,000).

Congratulations to all the Social Sciences Undergraduate award recipients. Over 30 ENVI students were awarded scholarships. A reception in honour of their achievements was held at the University Club.

The Earth's natural systems are under considerable stress as shown by climate change, loss of biodiversity, acidification of the oceans and soil degradation. The concept of "peak soil" will be discussed, and how we might reverse this trend by engaging in ecological restoration.
