BC meteorological station data
The BC station data portal provides weather and climate observations for a variety of variables across British Columbia from the Provincial Climate Data Set (PCDS).
Within the BC meteorological station data portal, users can:
- Explore locations of weather stations across BC using an interactive map
- Filter stations based on observation dates, variable, observing agency, region, and more
- Download station metadata describing the location, variables, observing agency and more
- Preview weather and climate variables for a selected weather station
- Download observational data in NetCDF, CSV or MS Excel format
About the data
The PCDS is a dynamic database that is maintained and made available for public access as part of PCIC’s commitment to the Climate Related Monitoring Program (CRMP). The CRMP is a cooperative effort by BC ministries, RioTinto, BC Hydro, Metro Vancouver, the Capital Regional District, and Environment and Climate Change Canada. This partnership allows PCIC to manage and share climate data across the station network, creating a unique and comprehensive set of weather and climate observations for British Columbia
Climatological averages are also provided for stations with sufficient data. Efforts are underway at PCIC to: i) implement a version control system for the PCDS; ii) provide climatologies for standard WMO periods, and; iii) improve data quality wherever possible.
New data are added to the database on an hourly, near real-time basis from:
- Environment and Climate Change Canada
- Ministry of Transportation and Transit
- Ministry of Forests’ Wildfire Management Branch
- Ministry of Environment and Parks’ Air Quality Network
The database is updated with non real-time data on a semi-monthly or as-available basis from:
- BC Hydro
- Ministry of Agriculture and Food
- Ministry of Forests’ Forest Ecosystem Research network
- Environment and Climate Change Canada’s data that are not available from the near real-time feed
- Hakai Institute
The BC station data portal provides data in raw form without any guarantee of quality assurance review. The data are preliminary and subject to change.
