Law programs

UVic Law stands out in Indigenous, environmental and international law and commitment to community engagement, social justice and human rights.

JD program

Study law in its broader social, political, historical and economic contexts through a program grounded in civic responsibility.

JD/JID program

Our JD/JID program in Canadian Common Law and Indigenous Legal Orders—the first of its kind in the world—prepares you to engage with both legal traditions and the intersections between them. Over 4 years, you'll earn 2 professional degrees: a Juris Doctor and a Juris Indigenarum Doctor, equipping you to practice law locally, nationally and internationally.

Experiential learning

UVic Law offers experiential learning opportunities through our clinical courses, and the only common law co-op education program in Canada.

Environmental Law Centre

LAW353: For nearly 20 years, the ELC has supported community groups, conservation organizations and First Nations across B.C., offering legal help, promoting environmental law reform and educating the public on environmental issues.

The Law Centre

LAW350: The Law Centre is a full-time, term-based clinical program that offers students a unique learning experience, combining legal theory, practical skills and community service.

Business Law Clinic

LAW349: Since 1998, the Business Law Clinic has been staffed by upper-year UVic Law students interested in corporate law and supporting B.C. entrepreneurs with their business needs.

Hands-on learning

Co-op

Get hands-on experience and engage in paid legal work with real clients, guided by practicing lawyers through Canada’s only full common law co-op program

Mooting

Take part in moots and competitions. Simulated court experiences help students build legal skills through judged competitions and some offer academic credit.

Exchange

Study abroad through an exchange program. Earn credit toward your UVic JD or JD/JID while gaining new perspectives at another university.
