First-year admissions
Juris Doctor (JD) Juris Doctor & Juris Indigenarum Doctor (JD/JID)
You can apply to UVic Law after completing at least 3 years of post-secondary study.
We admit a small JD class each fall that aims to most broadly reflect Canadian society. We encourage applicants with different life experiences and identities to apply.
The JD/JID is a smaller cohort program that admits a minimum of 25 students each September, at least half of which self-identify as Indigenous.
Application deadline
Applications open September 1 and close December 1 at 4 p.m. PST. Applications must be complete with all required documents by the deadline. Incomplete applications won’t be considered.
Additional documentation
Upload unofficial transcripts with your application by December 1. Email final fall grades to our senior admissions assistant no later than January 15. If you're offered admission, official transcripts will be required.
Please see individual admissions streams for specific documentation required:
Upper-level courses
All first year courses are mandatory. Course selection in later years is broader, though some courses are still required for your degree.
We offer a wide range of courses in both traditional and emerging areas of law. Not all are offered every year, but the curriculum is diverse and in-depth. Visiting or regular faculty may introduce new courses on special topics.
With permission, you can take up to 3.0 units in other UVic departments and explore interests through directed studies or research projects.
Environmental Law & Sustainability Concentration
Open to all JD students, the Environmental Law & Sustainability Concentration lets you take more courses in environmental law. Apply your skills while helping real clients with environmental legal issues.
