Biography

Dr. Maira Hassan is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Victoria. She holds a PhD in Law from the Peter A. Allard School of Law as a recipient of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship. While at Allard, Maira served as an Indigenous Legal Studies Academic Coach, providing academic tutoring to Indigenous law students. Prior to joining UVic Law, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice, UBC, and the Islamophobia Research Hub at York University.

Maira’s research focuses on the intersections of race, gender and equality. Her research on gendered racialization and the Muslim identity is a first of its kind study in Canada that examines the treatment and experiences of Muslim women complainants in sexual assault cases. Maira's research often seeks to center those in the margins and explores the real implications of law in society through a mixed-methods approach that employs theoretical, doctrinal and empirical-based methodologies. Her previous research work and publications include topics such as women in Canadian peacekeeping and legal perspectives on extraterritorial policing.
