Refugee Committee

A group of UVic History Department faculty, staff, students, and supporters is sponsoring a Syrian refugee family of five (parents and three children under fourteen) for settlement in Canada. We are a sponsorship group working under the umbrella of the Intercultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA), which has many years of experience in assisting refugees.

We hope you will consider a financial contribution to our sponsorship of this family. The cost of sponsoring a refugee family includes providing for their needs during their first year in Canada; we are told that the total cost may approach $50,000. There are several ways to donate:

Cheques including a mailing address will receive a tax receipt in time for spring 2016 tax filing.

Those on campus may leave cheques at the History Department office – attention Phyllis Senese (our treasurer)

Select “Refugee Sponsorship Fund.” You will have the option to “donate now” or “monthly”. The monthly option will trigger an automatic monthly payment.

In the message box be sure to write CG 003-15 to ensure the payment goes to our refugee sponsorship group.

For a tax receipt please fill out a donation form here.

All forms of donation are very welcome. Please be aware that the organization managing the online donation site claims a 3.5% administration fee from the donation amount. This does not occur with cheques.
