For the past 40 years, the History Department at the University of Victoria has helped organize an annual conference in Parksville called the Qualicum History Conference.  It is an interdisciplinary gathering of scholars from across the Pacific Northwest, and a key venue for graduate students to exchange ideas, share original research, and socialize with fellow students and faculty. Open to members of the community as well as the university, "Qualicum" provides many young scholars a first opportunity to present their research in a conference setting among colleagues from other institutions.

The conference is held at the Quality Resort Bayside hotel in Parksville, which you can view here: http://www.qualityresortparksville.com. (Students from UBC, SFU, UVic and UNBC, please ask at your individual institution about help with the costs of attending). We begin our program on Friday evening: after arriving at the hotel, conference attendees attend a plenary keynote talk followed by social activities. Student panels begin on Saturday morning, and, following the banquet dinner, our Saturday evening festivities include an entertaining post-dinner talk and a Qualicum tradition – student-faculty karaoke. Final panels are scheduled on Sunday morning, and conference attendees depart around midday. For a glimpse of what Qualicum is all about, have a look at a sample program and browse the photo album from the 2014 meeting on the conference Facebook page.

With participants from five universities, this promises to be a very exciting conference. We're looking forward to seeing you there!

Please contact Dr. Lynne Marks at qualicum@uvic.ca if you have any questions.
