ABSTRACT

Abstract

One of the biggest challenge of having different wireless technologies (3GPP and non-3GPP) available is the interconnecting or unifying of these networks. With wireless networks, roaming between different network technologies is needed, therefore seamless and efficient roaming is required over different network technologies. This can be achieved using a smart vertical handover decision (VHD) scheme. In this project a vertical handover decision (VHD) scheme is integrated with the handover necessity estimation(HNE) module, that minimizes the probability of handover failure and the probability of unnecessary handovers. The VHD scheme evaluated in this project is based on two main parts (a) time threshold and (b) the travelling time prediction that predicts the travelling distance by a mobile terminal (MT) within a 802.11 WLAN access. The evaluated scheme is then compared to two other VHD schemes i.e. the fixed RSS threshold based method and the hysteresis based method. The simulation based performance of the evaluated scheme shows that the probability of handover failure and the probability of unnecessary handover are significantly low when compared to the perfromance of the other two methods.
