ABSTRACT

Abstract:

A non-invasive technique for real-time and online detection of inter-turn winding faults in single-phase transformers has been proposed. A terminal measurement based transformer modeling scheme is central to the fault detection technique. Using the experimentally acquired primary line voltage and line currents of the transformer, the healthy estimated exciting current as well as the healthy estimated fault indicator value are computed from the coupled-inductive circuit based state-space transformer model. Finally, the healthy estimated fault indicator value is compared with the actual fault indicator value for detecting the presence of an inter-turn winding fault. Extensive simulation based studies as well as experiments have been done for verifying the effectiveness of the proposed technique in detecting incipient levels of inter-turn winding faults under any load conditions and also for estimating fault severity level.
