ABSTRACT

Abstract

Same as most other utilities in the world, BC Hydro is making great effort in modernizing its aging power grid, which was built several decades ago. The presentation outlines the gird modernization vision of BC Hydro and introduces mainly the smart metering and smart grid program currently ongoing. Emphasis is given to the drivers, benefits, technical components and implementation plans of the SMI program. Other key smart grid initiatives under way or in existing plan within BC Hydro are also presented.

Biography

Dr. Wen-Peng Luan received the B.Sc. degree from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1986, the M.Sc. degree from Tianjin University, Tianjin, China, in 1989, and Ph.D. degree from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, UK, in 1999, all in electrical engineering. He has extensive academic and industrial experience in power system security assessment, system planning, smart grid applications, and computer network information security. He is currently an Engineering Team Lead in the Smart Metering & Infrastructure Program at BC Hydro, Burnaby, BC, Canada. His special fields of interest include smart metering, smart grid solutions, asset management, control system cyber security and utility advanced applications. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Professional Engineer registered at the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia, Canada.
