ABSTRACT

Abstract:

Bombardier Aerospace designs and manufactures some of the most successful, high-performance jet aircraft for the business and commuter markets. As Manager of Advanced Aerodynamics, Dr. Kafyeke has played a key role in the design of transonic wings and high-lift systems for the Canadair series of Regional Jets, the Global Express and the BD-100 Continental Jet. The development of these aircraft have benefited from the progress made in Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at Bombardier-Canadair over the past 20 years. Dr. Kafyeke will discuss the state-of-the-art of CFD in industry and indicate how these techniques are used to derive optimal aerodynamic configurations. His talk will be illustrated by examples from recent Bombardier-Canadair projects: high speed powerplant integration on the Global Express and high-lift system development on the CRJ-700. He will also discuss some of the most advanced wing design methods being developed in the company. The presentation is slanted so that it will appeal to graduate and undergraduate students and the students will enjoy hearing about the design process at one of Canada's most dynamic companies.
