Abstract:

Reliable and energy-efficient wireless transmission is very important for the success of future Internet of Things (IoT). Average energy efficiency metric is not suitable for IoT applications that typically involve sporadic short transmission sessions with diverse quality of service (QoS) constraints. We analyze and minimize the energy consumption from a session-specific perspective for two fundamental transmission scenarios, i.e. point-to-point transmission and cooperative relaying transmission with wireless power transfer. Particularly, for point-to-point transmission, we analyze and optimize ideal continuous rate adaptation and continuous power adaptation schemes, where closed-form expressions for all optimal parameters and resulting energy outage rates are derived. These results establish the energy consumption limits for wireless transmissions over fading channels. In the case of cooperative relaying transmission with wireless power transfer, under ideal rate adaptive transmission with piecewise linear energy harvesting, we derive the closed-form expressions of all optimal parameters for a specific transmission session. In addition, through comparing with the results from average metric based optimal design, we show that session-specific metric based optimal design has better performance in terms of an individual transmission session.
