Elizabeth Tzatcheva (computer science)

As a computer science student, Elizabeth Tzatcheva (she/her) is passionate about bridging the gap between technology and real-world challenges. She’s also motivated by the opportunity to challenge stereotypes and to grow the number of women in her field.

So when she was navigating her first round of co-op applications and interviews, she connected with career educator Karae White to strengthen her résumé and develop her interview skills.

Fine-tuning applications

“While I had prior work experience, I felt that I was missing key skills that I needed to succeed in a co-op setting,” says Elizabeth.

“Through multiple one-on-one sessions with Karae (going over my résumé, cover letter, and interview preparation for each co-op opportunity), I was able to significantly improve my confidence and skills in navigating the co-op world for the first time. Karae's guidance ultimately helped me secure a co-op position that I truly enjoyed.”

Connecting with Career Services

Elizabeth’s hopes to carve out a career where she can solve meaningful problems while guiding and collaborating with others, as a project manager or business analyst. Her advice for other students building their career at UVic: connect with Career Services.

“If it weren’t for my meetings with Karae, I don’t think I would have been able to properly prepare for my first co-op or succeed in finding a position I loved as much as I did.

Beyond her expertise, Karae’s warm and bubbly personality made the process very enjoyable, and I always looked forward to our conversations. She is incredibly knowledgeable, kind, patient, and supportive, which makes all the difference for students navigating co-op for the first time. She is easily one of the most helpful people I have connected with at UVic."

“I highly recommend booking an interview prep session before your job interviews. Karae always tailored questions specifically to the company I was applying to, which made a huge difference. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to make mistakes during your sessions, that is exactly what advisors are there for, and it’s one of the best ways to learn.”
