Technology Solutions Centre: Apple purchases

All purchases of Apple computers with university funds must be made via WebReq through Purchasing Services, using quotations generated by a UVic-specific online store. Click the link below to access the web store:

WARNING: The Apple Store for Education Institution has very restrictive return terms. You will only be able to return products that are defective or the result of a shipping error by Apple. Please order carefully and if you have any doubt as to what you are ordering, contact us for assistance.

Questions about Apple purchases? Start with our FAQ

Can anyone buy an Apple computer?

Faculty members are eligible to purchase Apple laptops and desktops without additional documentation. Technical approval will be applied to your WebReq to allow the TSC to provide users with information and resources available for supporting Apple computers on campus.

Anyone from an administrative department is obligated to abide by University Policy AD2515, and will need to complete a Standards Review Document and attach it to a WebReq submitted to the TSC. For more information regarding AD2515, please see our FAQ section.

Can I use this store for personal purchases?

The UVic online Apple store is for institutional purchases only. For personal purchases, please use the general Apple Store for Education to benefit from the educational discount.

How do I buy an iPhone?

Currently you cannot purchase iPhones from the institutional store; instead they must be ordered through the University's corporate plan. More information can be found here, or you can contact the Voice Services Office at switch@uvic.ca

How long will it take for my order to arrive?

All institutional purchases are shipped directly from the manufacturer or an Apple distribution centre. Items like accessories, iOS devices, or peripherals may arrive sooner if they are shipping from a warehouse located in North America. For laptops and desktops, assume an average of 3 weeks as orders come directly from the manufacturing facilities. If you encounter an order that takes longer than 30 days to arrive, please contact Purchasing Services with the WebReq number from your order.

What delivery address should I use?

Your order will arrive via courier direct from Apple, so use a campus address that is accessible by the public and regularly staffed. Many people choose their department office as their delivery location to ensure someone is available to sign for the delivery. If you intend to use an off-campus delivery address, make sure that it is clearly listed in the Comments field of the WebReq.

I didn't receive my quote from the online store!

The institutional Apple store will email a PDF quote to the email address you enter when saving your cart. Some users report a 5 - 20 minute delay in receiving the email, depending on the time of day. If you use filters for your email inbox, you may have to check junk mail or folders.

If you still haven't received your email, you may have to create your cart again. Ensure you are using the correct email address, and consider including another address in the Send Copy To field if you suspect your account is filtering incorrectly.

Can I still have my Apple computer repaired on campus?

Yes! Repairs of Apple computers are still performed on campus by our Apple-certified technicians. Apple laptops and desktops can be dropped off at the Bookstore, TSC, or the Computer Help Desk for this service.

TSC recommendations for Apple purchase

If you are purchasing an Apple computer to use on campus, you will need adapters for connecting to classroom projectors, external displays, and other common devices. We advise that you check what types of adapters you may need prior to submitting your order.  If you need assistance, please contact the TSC.

AppleCare

The TSC strongly recommends purchasing the AppleCare Protection Plan for all Apple laptop, and desktop, and display purchases to ensure that every university asset can remain fully-functional for the duration of its use on campus. All in-warranty parts and labour provided by our on-site Apple Certified Technicians when servicing your machine are covered for the full three years. Additionally, AppleCare warranties are worldwide and offer unlimited telephone support with Apple, which is great for users who travel extensively with their Mac laptops. Please note that accidental damage such as liquid spills may not be covered by AppleCare.

Best practices for keeping your Mac secure

As employees of a BC public institution, we must abide by Information Security Policy IM7800 to ensure any confidential data is being stored securely and in accordance with provincial legislation. UVic's Information Security Office has extensive reference information for setting up your computer for best use on campus. If you have any questions about enabling built-in security features, installing protection software, or taking advantage of campus back-up systems, please contact the Computer Help Desk.
