That moment a new student sets foot on the UVic campus for the first time marks the start of one life’s most transformative and memorable experiences. But what does a new student university experience look like when you take most in-person activity out of the equation?

Supporting student enrolment during a pandemic

When the Strategic Enrolment Management (SEM) Plan launched in 2019, no one could have predicted that year two would involve a global pandemic. Implementing tactics focused on the student experience has been challenging alongside a transition to online learning and teaching. But the good thinking behind SEM has helped UVic to manage the impacts of COVID-19 and to support student success during a difficult year.

International supports during a global crisis

As we draw closer to an in-person fall term alongside the continued evolution of travel restrictions and self-isolation requirements, many of us are getting questions from international students. Tricia Best and the International Students Services team are here to help with several new resources and supports in place.

Initiatives around Safe Sport affirms Vikes culture of excellence

The Vikes are heading into 2021 having implemented several significant initiatives to provide a safe and supportive environment for student-athletes to pursue high standards of sports performance. Together the initiatives provide new and additional resources, education and support for students and coaching staff in the Vikes Varsity Program. They also reaffirm Vikes’ commitment to a culture of excellence free from bullying, harassment, discrimination or abuse of any kind.

Student Wellness Centre now open

UVic’s Health, Counselling and Multifaith teams have come together to provide students with an integrated, holistic approach to their wellness needs. Following a $6.5-million renovation, more than 50 combined staff moved into the Student Wellness Centre (SWC) on the first floor of the newly named Health and Wellness Building, formerly known as the Technology Enterprise Facility, in mid-July.
