December 01, 2025

Earlier this month, an instrumental figure in the development of the School of Public Administration passed away, Ron Cheffins.

Ron Cheffins taught at McGill University and Université de Montreal before joining UVic’s Political Science department. Ron moved to Victoria to help establish the law faculty and he was one of the faculty members who welcomed UVic Law’s first students in 1975, as well as helping establish UVic’s School of Public Administration. He was a Justice of the British Columbia Court of Appeal and the Yukon Court of Appeal (1985-87), and a member of the BC Law Reform Commission (now BC Law Institute), including serving as Vice-Chair. Ron also worked in media related to politics and elections though CBC, local television and CFAX radio, where he hosted a weekly radio program for nearly 20 years.
