Research Interests

 Dr. Evans studies the three-dimensional structures of proteins that interact with carbohydrates. His laboratory seeks to understand how the shape and chemical properties of a protein determine which carbohydrate it recognizes and how strongly the two molecules bind. The group studies carbohydrate-processing enzymes, microbial surface proteins, blood-group enzymes, and antibodies that recognize carbohydrate-containing targets. X-ray crystallography is used to determine protein structures at the atomic level, while additional methods measure the strength and dynamics of molecular interactions. Computer modelling and scientific visualization help explain how these molecules function. This work provides insight into microbial biology, immune recognition, blood-group biology, biotechnology, and the development of antibodies or enzymes with improved properties.
