Research & partnerships
Molecular Life Sciences is a research-intensive academic school advancing foundational and mechanistic understanding of living systems from molecules and cells to organisms and ecosystems. Our research is enabled by core technology platforms in proteomics and metabolomics, structural biology, genomics, and advanced imaging.
Research Pillars
Molecular & Microbial Pathogenesis
Researchers focused on Molecular and Microbial Pathogenesis are interested in understanding the interplay between microbes and their hosts and environments. They look at the molecular interactions these microbial organisms have with their hosts, and how these interactions alter the health of their hosts. These researchers examine both pathogens, including parasitic worms, respiratory viruses, and infectious bacteria, as well as commensal members of our bacterial microbiome.
Genome Biology & Cell Signalling
Researchers focused on Genome Biology and Cell Signalling examine the molecules of life - carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids – and the intricate pathways they are involved in, including metabolism, growth, aging, and replication. Researchers work to define complex signalling pathways and mechanisms, continually expanding our knowledge of how these molecules function on a microscopic scale. This research can focus on the enzymes involved in carbohydrate breakdown, the metabolism of cancer, the signalling and repair pathways during genome replication, and more!
Diagnostics, Therapeutics & Vaccines
Researchers working on Diagnostics, Therapeutics, and Vaccines are pioneering the development of tools to address important conditions affecting humans, animals, and plants. Research in these labs translates our molecular understanding of disease into practical solutions, designing and testing tools to diagnose conditions quicker or more accurately, to prevent the onset of disease, or to treat illness more effectively. Research focus is on various areas including cancer treatment, the detection of significant bacterial pathogens, and the prevention of zoonotic diseases.
