About the talk

South of Osaka, the Kumano region has been a pilgrim's destination for over 1,000 years. This network of ancient trails was officially twinned with the famous pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela in 1997 and collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. This region covers a number of sacred places, including Ise, Mt. Kōya, and the three shrines of Kumano: Hongu, Shingu, and Japan’s tallest waterfall, Nachi.

CAPI Visiting Professor Cody Poulton will give an illustrated talk on the history and current revival of this pilgrimage to the heart of Japan.
