Achievement Awards recognize undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the pursuit of excellence in their endeavours. Fine arts, athletics, and other areas where individual expression becomes public are recognized through these awards. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need and a minimum 3.5 sessional grade point average for students continuing at or transferring to UVic, or a 70% admission average for students commencing postsecondary studies for the first time. Departments will distribute application forms to prospective students, who will complete and return them to the Office of the Dean of Fine Arts.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Dennis and Evelyn Kershaw Bursary in Theatre*

Finlayson Bursary*

A bursary made available by Mr. Albert Winkel of Victoria, is offered to a second or third year student in the Department of Theatre who can show evidence of financial need and outstanding ability in the area of technical theatre and who is continuing studies in the department.

Lawrence Eastick Bursary*

A bursary is awarded to a student in the Department of Theatre who displays an interest in the technical aspects of theatre production and is continuing in theatre at the University of Victoria.

Lynne Conway-Wilson Memorial Bursary*

Peter L. Smith Bursary in Theatre History*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students who display ability in Theatre History and who are continuing at the University of Victoria.

Phoenix Theatre Bursary*

An award will be made annually to two or more students in the Department of Theatre. Academic standing, contribution to the Department's activities, and the financial circumstances of the student will be considered.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be selected upon the recommendation of the Department of Theatre.

Ailsa and Roger Bishop Entrance Scholarship in Theatre*

One or more scholarships of a minimum of $4,000 per year, payable for up to four years, are awarded to academically outstanding students entering the Department of Theatre in the Faculty of Fine Arts.  Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need.  

To be automatically renewed a student must have completed a total of 12 or more academic units in any two terms of study between May and April and maintained a grade point average of 7.50/9.00 or higher on the best 12 units. The scholarship is automatically renewed for each year of the student’s full time study in the Department of Theatre until completion of a first degree or for a maximum of three years, whichever is the shorter period.  A student whose grade point average falls below 7.50/9.0 may file a written appeal with the Senate Committee on Awards to seek special consideration for the renewal of the scholarship. 

Students registered in a co-op or work experience work-term will automatically be renewed when they next complete 12 or more academic units in two terms, provided they have a grade point average of 7.50/9.0 or higher in the two terms.  Any student who takes neither a co-op, work experience/work-term, nor academic units for more than one term may forfeit their scholarship.

Finlayson Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students entering second or third year in the Department of Theatre who show outstanding ability in the area of technical theatre and who are continuing studies in the department. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Theatre.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Barbara McIntyre Scholarship in Theatre*

A scholarship is awarded to a third or fourth year student who, in the opinion of the Department of Theatre, displays outstanding ability in the area of theatre in education. If there is no theatre in education candidate, the award may go to a student in any branch of theatre work.

A third year student must use the scholarship to complete fourth year studies at the University of Victoria Theatre Department; a fourth year student is allowed the option of furthering studies at a recognized school of theatre or university.

Bentley Nichvolodoff Memorial Book Prize*

A book prize is awarded to the student with the highest aggregate grade in Theatre 246 and Theatre 347.

Clio Book Prize in Theatre History*

A book prize is awarded to a third or fourth year undergraduate student with an A average in two of the 300 or 400 level courses in Theatre History. Approval of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Theatre.

Crestview-Chelsea Theatre Award*

An award is offered at the discretion of the Department of Theatre to a promising and deserving student in Theatre who is continuing at the University of Victoria.

Dorothy Somerset Scholarship in Theatre*

A scholarship made available by Miss Rivkah Isaacs of Victoria, is awarded to the third or fourth year student who, in the opinion of the Department of Theatre, displays outstanding talent and devotion to any branch of theatre work.

A third year student must use the scholarship to complete fourth year studies at the University of Victoria Theatre Department; a fourth year student is allowed the option of furthering studies at a recognized school of theatre, such as the National Theatre School or the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Dr. Marion Porath Legacy Scholarship in Theatre Costume Design or Construction

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Theatre who have displayed outstanding ability in a major production in the area of costume design or costume construction and are continuing in the Department of Theatre. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Theatre.

Dr. Marion Porath Legacy Scholarship in Theatre Performance

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students who have distinguished themselves in a major production in the Department of Theatre and are continuing in the Theatre Performance Program. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Theatre.

Dr. Marion Porath Legacy Scholarship in Theatre Production and Management

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Theatre who have displayed outstanding ability in a major production in the area of production or stage management and are continuing in the Department of Theatre. Elisabeth Jackson Scholarship in Theatre*

A scholarship is awarded to a third year woman student with high academic standing who is continuing in the Theatre program at the University and who, in the opinion of the Department, displays outstanding promise in acting.

Frances Theron Spirit of the Phoenix Award

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students who are graduating from the Department of Theatre. The recipients will have maintained good academic standing and demonstrated a high level of involvement within the Department as demonstrated by a generosity of spirit, proven leadership skills, exemplary work ethic, and a dedication to community building. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Theatre.

Gwladys and Gwen Downes Scholarship in Theatre*

JTS Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding student in the Department of Visual Arts, School of Music and the Department of Theatre. Every year the award must go to a different department beginning with the Department of Visual Arts, then the School of Music and then the Department of Theatre on a rotating basis.

Katherine E. and Murray D. Edwards Scholarship in Theatre*

A scholarship is awarded to a student in the Department of Theatre. Preference will be given to a student with aptitude for, and an interest in set and/or costume design or construction.

Keith Provost Memorial Scholarship in Theatre*

A scholarship is awarded to a 2nd or 3rd year student in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program in the Department of Theatre. Preference will be given to a student in the acting option.

Muriel Conway Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a promising student in Theatre who is continuing at the University of Victoria. This award was established by the family and friends of Muriel Conway to honour her dedication as a patron of theatre, especially the Malvern Festival in England, the Ottawa Little Theatre, and the Victoria Bastion Theatre.

Nigel Leach Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student who has completed third year and is entering fourth year Acting in the Theatre program and who displays outstanding promise in Shakespearean interpretation.

Opening Night Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a theatre student entering third year with a high academic standing in first and second year theatre courses, who has distinguished themselves in a departmental production(s) and who is continuing in the Theatre program. Robert G. Lawrence Theatre in Canada Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate 3rd or 4th year students in the Department of Theatre studying Canadian Theatre History.

Royal Victorian Fashion Society Costume Design Scholarship

A scholarship of $500 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Theatre specializing in costume design.

Sarah Blackstone Scholarship in Theatre

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Theatre. Preference will be given to students with a Theatre History focus. Nomination will be made by the Department of Theatre. In the case of a graduate nominee, approval of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Theatre.

Theatre Retirees' Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Theatre. Nominations will be made by the Department of Theatre. The scholarships will be awarded to students studying with a retiring faculty or staff member in honour of their contribution to the department. In the case of a graduate nominee, selection of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Theatre.

Thomas and Elizabeth Mayne Scholarship in Theatre

One or more scholarships, to a total value of $3,000, are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in their third or fourth year of the BFA Program in Theatre. Preference will be given to any of the following options: Acting, Applied Theatre, Direction, Theatre History, Theatre Writing.

Trish Grainge Scholarship*

One or two scholarships are awarded to promising students who are continuing studies in acting and voice at the University of Victoria or any other public university in British Columbia. The award(s) is presented in honour of Trish Grainge, a reader of audio books for the blind, by Mrs. Ivy B. (Pat) Bevan.

Valentine Barrow Scholarship in Theatre History*

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering fourth year with an outstanding average in any 3.0 units of upper-level theatre history courses. A maximum of 1.5 units of directed studies in theatre history may be included in the total of 3.0 units.

Vincent Short Memorial Theatre Scholarship

A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student entering third or fourth year who displays outstanding ability in the Design, Directing or Production & Management specialization in the Department of Theatre. Scholarship recipients will be nominated by the Department of Theatre.
