School of Social Work Awards

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Arthur C. Abrahamson Memorial Bursary*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies 

One or more bursaries will be awarded to students in the Distance Education Bachelor of Social Work Program. The intent of the bursaries is to assist students who encounter severe financial difficulties in returning to full or part-time studies. The bursaries are awarded in memory of Arthur C. (Art) Abrahamson who, as a consultant to the School of Social Work in its early years, was a source of immense help to students and faculty.

Dianne Bourne Memorial Bursary*

A bursary is offered to a full or part-time student admitted to the School of Social Work, who is in or is planning a career in child welfare practice in northern British Columbia.

Herta Hartmanshenn Bursary in Social Work*

Value: Varies | Number: Two 

One undergraduate bursary and one graduate bursary are awarded to single parents registered in degree programs in Social Work. Undergraduate students must be registered in a minimum of 9.0 units of study and graduate students must be registered with the Faculty of Graduate Studies on a full time basis for winter session. If there is no qualifying graduate student in a particular year, the second award will be given to a qualifying Undergraduate student.

Jean Marie Sherwin Bursary in Social Work*

A bursary is awarded to a student in the School of Social Work who has completed third year, is preceeding to fourth year and whose need for financial aid is such that the usual sources of assistance are not sufficient.  Preference will be given to students with family responsibilities and whose permanent residence is outside Greater Victoria.

Joyce and Bill Dunning Bursary in Social Work*

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students entering or continuing in the School of Social Work.

Roy E.L. Watson Bursary in Social Work*

Value: Varies | Number: Four

Three undergraduate bursaries and one graduate bursary are awarded to single parents registered in degree programs in Social Work.  Undergraduate students must be taking a minimum of 9 units of study and graduate students must be registered with the Faculty of Graduate Studies on a full-time basis for the Winter session.  If there is no qualifying graduate student in a particular year, the fourth award will be given to a qualifying undergraduate student.  In the case of the graduate award, selection will be made by Student Financial Aid Services on the recommendation of the School of Social Work.

Sandra MacDonald-Dohm Bursary

Value: $300 | Number: 1 

A bursary of $300 is awarded to a mature woman single parent student entering the Bachelor of Social Work Program.

Trudy Usher Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to Indigenous students who are entering or continuing the School of Social Work at the University of Victoria

William Wiilbert Ingot Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing in the School of Social Work.

Win Self-Sufficiency Bursary

Value: $500 | Number: 1

A bursary of $500 is awarded to a woman First Nations student in the School of Social Work.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Irene Cohen Scholarship

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student who is either continuing or transferring from a BC College into their 3rd year in the School of Social Work.  Students may receive this award for two years.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated in the Terms of Reference, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Anita Allardice Lancaster Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded to a full time student who is entering year four in the School of Social Work. Academic standing and participation in university or community affairs will be considered.

British Columbia Association of Social Workers Prize

Value: $250 | Number: 1

A prize of $250 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student who has completed the first year of the program in the School of Social Work.

Certificate of Outstanding Academic Distinction in Human and Social Development*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A certificate of distinction and a prize of at least $1000 is awarded to the student with the highest graduating grade point average in the Faculty of Human and Social Development registered for the BA, BCYC, BSc, BSN or BSW degree.

Two or more scholarships are awarded to students entering fourth year in the School of Social Work.

Jean and Archie Bain Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering fourth year in the School of Social Work. Preference will be given to a student who has a special interest in child and family welfare and/or early childhood prevention programs.

Robert S. Evans Memorial Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

Scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students who intend to continue their studies at the University of Victoria as follows:

  1. One scholarship to a student in each of the programs: Child and Youth Care, Nursing and Social Work, on the recommendation of the respective Directors;

  2. One scholarship to a student who has completed the qualifying 300-level courses for an Honours or Major program in Astronomy;

  3. Two scholarships for award within the student body at large. If no suitable candidates can be found in categories (1) or (2), additional awards can be made in category (3).

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Phil Petersen Scholarship in Social Work

Value: $500 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $500 is awarded to an academically outstanding 3rd or 4th year undergraduate Indigenous student in the School of Social Work.

Ramona Williams Memorial Scholarship in Social Work*

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship in the sum of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate Indigenous student in the School of Social Work. Preference will be given to students from the Cowichan Nation.

Roberta Taylor Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in the School of Social Work who is participating in either on-campus or distance education programs. Preference will be given to a mature student returning to school with a young family.
