Achievement Awards recognize undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the pursuit of excellence in their endeavours. Fine arts, athletics, and other areas where individual expression becomes public are recognized through these awards. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need and a minimum 3.5 sessional grade point average for students continuing at or transferring to UVic, or a 70% admission average for students commencing postsecondary studies for the first time. Departments will distribute application forms to prospective students, who will complete and return them to the Office of the Dean of Fine Arts.

Bursaries

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Art and Music Education Bursary

Two bursaries of $500 each are awarded to undergraduate students, one for a student studying in Art Education in the Faculty of Education and one for a student studying in Music Education in the School of Music.

Victor and Mary Hess Bursary*

A bursary is awarded to a continuing student in the Bachelor of Music program who is specializing in any instrument.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

Vic Scott Award in Voice Accompaniment*

One or more awards are given to entering or continuing undergraduate students in the vocal program in the School of Music who have a demonstrated need for vocal coaching or accompaniment support. Applicants must submit an outline of costs for their program and a brief rationale explaining their coaching/accompaniment needs (maximum 350 words) to School of Music office by May 15. If no students are eligible in a given year the award may go to any student in the vocal program.

Vivian Marshall and Rob Morris Memorial Music Award*

Daisie Thirlwall Scholarship in Violin*

Scholarships in varying amounts are awarded annually to gifted violinists who demonstrate excellence or potential in performance and who are registered in the Bachelor of Music program. Preference will be given to newly admitted students. In the event there are no qualified violinists in any given year, other string instrumentalists will be considered. In the case of equally qualified candidates, need shall be the determining factor.

Douglas Ross Memorial Scholarship*

School of Music Faculty String Award*

One or more awards are given to outstanding entering or continuing undergraduate violinists, violists, cellists, or double bassists, in recognition of performance ability. In cases of equal performance skill, need should be the determining factor. 

The awards are named in recognition of School of Music faculty who made personal contributions to inaugurate this fund, but it is further supplemented through proceeds from scholarship concerts and other sources. The number and size of such awards will be determined annually by the School faculty.

Applicants must submit a letter (maximum 500 words) describing what inspired them to become a music educator. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

Florence Gertrude McConnell Award in Music*

Martin Bonham and Lloyd Howard Travel to Italy Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate or graduate students in the School of Music who are travelling to Italy to broaden their knowledge of western classical music. This activity may include, but is not limited to, travel, accommodation, admission fees, archival research, galleries, language training, and/or participation in exhibitions, courses, performances, workshops, conferences or presentations. Preference is for students using the funding to directly support travel costs. Applicants must include a brief description (50-100 words) of their reason for travel.

Undergraduate students apply through the on-line application via Online Tools under Student Awards and Financial Aid. Graduate students must submit an application to the School of Music Office by September 15.

If no students are eligible in a given year the award may go to any student in the vocal program. The awards are named in recognition of School of Music faculty who made personal contributions to inaugurate this fund, but it is further supplemented through proceeds from scholarship concerts and other sources. The number and size of such awards will be determined annually by the School faculty.

One or more scholarships are awarded to entering or continuing academically outstanding undergraduate student(s) pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree with a performance major in voice, with a preference for students studying opera.

Taylor Scholarship in Music*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students in any year of study for the Bachelor of Music degree. The scholarship is presented in honour of Dr. M.G. Taylor, the first President of the University of Victoria, and Mrs. V. Taylor, and is administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Victoria Jazz Society Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student in the Bachelor of Music Program who has demonstrated excellence in jazz.

Victoria Musical Art Society Scholarship*

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 each are awarded to outstanding undergraduate performers entering third or fourth year in the School of Music intending to pursue a career in music. The students must have been residents of the Capital Regional District for at least two years and not have been a previous recipient of this award.

Will and Mary Rook Scholarship in Music*

William Ross Holm Scholarship in Music*

A scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student in music composition in the School of Music.

  • In the case of an undergraduate student, approval will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

  • In the case of a graduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.
