Biochemistry and Microbiology Awards

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Ada and Robert Le Grys Memorial Bursary in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology*

A bursary is awarded annually, on the basis of financial need and academic performance, to a student participating in a major or honours program in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology which bears on human conditions - with special emphasis on human nutritional requirements and related subjects.

Dr. Ed Ishiguro - Oak Bay Kiwanis Bursary

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology

Dr. Ernst von Rudloff Bursary in Biochemistry*

An award is made annually to a student beginning year 3 or 4 of a major or honours program in Biochemistry. The award is open to all students in this program, especially those interested in plant biochemistry. The award will be based on academic standing and financial need.

Gerhardt B. Friedmann Bursary

One or more bursaries are awarded annually to a student entering year 2 or 3 of an Honours or Major program in the Departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics and Astronomy.

Jane Seaborne Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to women students in a major or honours program inBiology, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Chemistry, Earth and Ocean Sciences, or Physics and Astronomy. Preference will be given to students who are involved in intramural sports.

John Carling Fraser Memorial Bursary *

Two or more bursaries are awarded to 3rd or 4th year students in the Faculty of Science who have declared a major in Biology, Biochemistry or Microbiology. Preference will be given to students who are active in student politics and/or volunteer work with youth groups in the community, especially Scouts Canada.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes. 

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through submission of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools. 
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

Alexander and Glenda Kirk Award

Up to a maximum of three awards are given to students in a Major or Honours program in the Department of Chemistry who have a minimum 7.0/9.0 GPA. Preference is given to single parents or caregivers with demonstrated financial need and personal circumstances that prevent them from participating in co-op and/or work terms.  If there are no eligible Chemistry students then the award may be given to students in a Major or Honours program in Biochemistry.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Departments of Chemistry or Biochemistry and Microbiology.

Allen P. James Scholarship*

Two scholarships, one in the Department of Biology and one in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology, are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering fourth year who have a declared Major in a program offered in those departments. Applicants are required to submit a 300-500 word statement that describes their interest in pursuing basic science research either through graduate studies and/or a career in research. Students must have demonstrated financial need. Applicants must apply through the Student Awards and Financial Aid online in-course application accessible each year between April 1 and May 31.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Departments of Biology and Biochemistry and Microbiology.

Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate women students registered in pre-medicine disciplines such as Biochemistry/Microbiology, Biology or Chemistry. Preference will be given to students who have stated an intention to continue on to medical school. Approval of the graduate recipients will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the appropriate departments.

Approval of the undergraduate recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards.

Hugh and Lilian Salmond Scholarship in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in a major or honours program in biochemistry and/or microbiology and who have demonstrated financial need.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology.

John Carling Fraser Memorial Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 2

Two scholarships are awarded to 3rd or 4th year students in the Faculty of Science, with a declared major in Biology, Microbiology or Biochemistry. Preference will be given to students who are active in student politics and/or volunteer work with youth groups in the community, especially Scouts Canada. Students should submit a letter or resume as part of their application in which they describe their contributions to such volunteer/youth organizations.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

 

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated in the Terms of Awards, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

A scholarship is awarded to a student in an Honours or Major program in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology who has devised or contributed to a concept or procedure promoting good physical health.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology.

Charles Humphrey Memorial Scholarship in Microbiology*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student proceeding to year 3 or 4 of an Honours or Major program. 

Approval of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology.

Hugh and Lilian Salmond Biochemistry and/or Microbiology Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student in an Honours or Major program in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology who has devised or contributed to a concept or procedure promoting good physical health.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology.

Terry Fox Scholarship

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded by the Victoria Real Estate Board to an outstanding student who is in the third year of a program of Biochemistry and Microbiology and who has indicated an interest in the area of cancer research. This award is also tenable at a medical school.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology.
