Hi, I’m Gillian. I have a background in English Literature (BA, Hons., UVic, and MA, Queen’s University, Kingston), and I am a Level Two TESL Canada certified English instructor with a Certificate in Editing (Simon Fraser University). Before my return to UVic, I was a Teaching Assistant for first year English Literature, an elementary school teacher and professor of English in South Korea, and an ESL and TESL instructor here in Victoria. Now, as one of the CAC’s English as an Additional Language Specialists, I tutor at the CAC, facilitate workshops in English for Academic Purposes, and run the English Conversation Café, among other things. Throughout my career in English education, I have had the opportunity to write and edit almost every kind of writing that exists, and my main areas of expertise are sentence structure, eliminating wordiness, and helping EAL learners acquire the tools they need to build strong, clear sentences and paragraphs. I truly believe that being an effective writer is a skill that can be taught and acquired, and I look forward to helping students set and achieve their writing goals.
