Tia's Advice: Winter Break

Tia's Advice is a section of the UVic Global Community Newsletter that includes valuable information and important dates for undergraduate and graduate international students in the following categories: degree-seeking, incoming exchange and incoming study abroad/visiting.

The International Student Centre will:

  • remain open with regular hours until 4:30pm on Friday, December 22
  • close for a winter break
  • re-open with regular hours at 9:00am on Tuesday, January 2

If you have urgent questions or concerns to discuss with the ISS International Student Advising team, please visit or contact the International Student Centre as soon as possible so we can assist you before the start of winter break.

Important Dates

December 15: Deadline for undergraduate students to apply to graduate for spring convocation.

December 15: U-Pass privileges begin for winter session second term.*

December 18: Last day of winter session first term exams for all Faculties.

December 24: Christmas Eve.

December 25: Christmas Day.

December 25: Winter break begins. UVic services will be closed for winter break.

December 26: Boxing Day.

December 31: New Year's Eve.

January 1: New Year's Day.

January 2: Winter break ends. UVic services re-open.

January 3: Winter session second term classes begin for all Faculties.

January 9: International Student Welcome.

January 10 - 11: Clubs and Course Union Days in the Student Union Building.

January 11: Last day for course changes in Faculty of Law.

January 16: Last day for 100% reduction of tuition fees if you drop winter session second term courses. Students must pay 50% of tuition fees for courses dropped after this date. DO NOT assume the instructor will drop you from a course if you do not attend classes. You are responsible for your own registration.**

January 19: Last day for adding courses that begin in winter session second term.

January 22: Change of coverage deadline for the UVSS Health and Dental Plan.***

January 31: Change of coverage deadline for the GSS Health and Dental Plan.***

January 31: Last day for paying winter session second term tuition fees without penalty.**

* Incoming exchange students do not automatically receive U-Pass privileges but can opt in by purchasing a UVSS or GSS membership package.

** Incoming exchange students do not pay tuition fees to UVic.

*** Incoming exchange students are not automatically enrolled for the UVSS or GSS Health and Dental Plans but may be eligible to opt in during the change of coverage period if they choose to purchase a UVSS or GSS membership package. We strongly recommend this option for students who do not already have extended health and dental insurance.
