UVic Theatre students remount "Foundation"

A Foundation for New Beauty Norms
“’Nude’ is normal, but normal doesn’t include me.”

UVic Theatre students remount an ambitious play entitled Foundation that challenges Western beauty ideals. Foundation was voted the UVic SATCo 2016 – 2017 Pick of the Season. The remount will take place on Monday, October 2nd at the UVic Hickman Building (Room 105) at 7:30 pm. There is a suggested $5 donation.

The play focuses on the various experiences of young people of colour growing up in a world dominated by white beauty ideals. Stories were drawn both from news articles and from the actors’ own experiences. “To people of colour the lack of representation is obvious,” says director Megan Chandler, “but if you’re white you might go your whole life without noticing it at all.”

Following its debut in February, Foundation was voted UVic SATCo (Student Alternative Theatre Company) Pick of the Season by the department. This remount of the original production was made possible by support from the UVic Human Equity and Human Rights as well as Antidote, Victoria’s grassroots network for empowering multiracial girls and women.

The ensemble consists of UVic students Lahna Lampson, Brittany McAree, Angelo Ngkaion, Rahat Saini, Ann-Bernice Thomas, Hilary Wheeler, and Taryn Yoneda. Costume designer Rachel Levy. Lighting Designer for the original production Jaxun Maron. Sound Designers Natasha Guerra and Olivia Wheeler. Marketer Hannah Bell. Stage Manager Leah Anthony. Assistant Stage Manager Emma Jo Conlin. Director Megan Chandler.
