Our team seeks to empower communities in Canada and internationally through interventions at all stages of the drinking water supply chain. We are particularly interested in metals and other contaminations introduced through human activity.

Dr. Caetano Dorea is an Professor in Civil Engineering and leads the Public Health & Environmental Engineering (PH2E) Lab. His interests and expertise are at the crossroads of environmental and public health engineering. This includes the development and evaluation of sustainable water and sanitation/wastewater technologies, field- and operator-appropriate water/wastewater/ faecal sludge quality analytical methods, and functional ecology characterisation of biological treatment systems for safeguarding the health of the public and the environment. His activities are focused both on low-resource contexts (low- and middle-income countries, remote/rural communities, etc.) as well as high-income contexts.



Dr. Ralph Evins is an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering, following a Group Leader position at Empa and ETH in Zurich, Switzerland. His research includes: energy use in building and districts; smart cities; sustainable transitions; modelling of energy flows; optimization algorithms; data science and machine learning; academic software development. His Energy in Cities group at UVic are the developers of the BESOS Platform and the Net-Zero Navigator tool, as well as conducting projects with Natural Resources Canada and the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions.





Dr. Katya Rhodes is an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Administration and a member of the Institute for Integrated Energy Systems at the University of Victoria. She investigates the topics of low-carbon economy transitions and climate policy design using survey tools, energy-economy models, media and content analysis. Prior to joining the academia, Dr. Rhodes worked in the British Columbia (BC) Climate Action Secretariat where she led greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions modelling and economic analyses for the provincial CleanBC plan. Dr. Rhodes' professional experiences also include the development of clean technology and green jobs databases at the Vancouver Economic Commission, analysis of the provincial policy for the Cumulative Effects Framework in the BC Government, the investigation of public and stakeholder perceptions of BC’s carbon tax at the Pembina Institute, and teaching Environmental Economics at Royal Roads University.


Emeritus Professor of Environmental Technology and founding Director of the Centre for Environmental Strategy at the University of Surrey, UK; previously Head of the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Surrey. He is a past President and Executive Director of the International Society for Industrial Ecology.
Anne-Marie Daniel is a co-Founder and Partner in Roy Group, a Canadian coaching and training firm cultivating transformational leadership in business, government, education and social impact organizations. Her interest in innovation and worries about our environmental crisis led her to biomimicry in 2006. Biomimicry is the practice of learning from Nature’s billions of years of design experience to create products, processes, and systems. The goal is to secure personal and planetary health by looking to nature’s recipes and strategies which are time tested and life-friendly. NatuR&D, an innovation arm of Roy Group launched in 2018 and supports teams to transform everyday problems into designs that work with Nature.
Joel is a 2023 graduate of U. Vic’s Industrial Ecology program. Currently serving as the leader of the Sustainability Department for Trek Bicycle Corporation he works to sets corporate strategy, works to source sustainable materials and energy, handles reporting, and helps with regulatory compliance. Joel’s background is in mechanical and polymer engineering with 7 years experience in the tire industry.
Christine Lintott is the Founding Principal of Christine Lintott Architects Inc. She is a Registered Professional Architect in the Province of British Columbia, a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and a Certified Biomimicry Professional. Her built environment design expertise spans multiple typologies, from single family homes, to mixed use, to large scale residential, institutional and commercial projects, along with master planning of campus, industrial and community scale developments. Christine is an innovator in designing context appropriate solutions that aspire to benefit the broader community as well as the natural systems of place.
Bob brings 30 years of knowledge in public policy and programs in the mining, energy, agriculture, and environmental sectors. Most of his career has been dedicated to becoming an expert in extended producer responsibility (EPR) policy and program design.
Ted started his work career following completion of a Bachelor of Science in Human Performance at the University of Victoria (1980), teaching and directing employee fitness and lifestyle programs in Victoria, British Columbia and Calgary, Alberta. With a focus on community sustainability in his Masters of Public Administration, University of Victoria (1994).
Fraser is a municipal engineer and sustainability professional currently working in Tofino, British Columbia. Fraser completed a 20-year career in the Canadian Navy as a marine engineer and held posts in the UK, USA and across Canada as a ship's chief engineer and project manager in naval technology innovation, engine emissions and fleet renewal programs. After retiring from the navy, he transitioned to local government as the Director of Engineering and Public Works at the City of Victoria (2015 to 2020).
