Butioni Award

This award is offered through the kind generosity of our donor, Doctor Elizabeth Archibald. She provides the following background:

The Buitoni Award was established in honour of my late godmother Alba Buitoni, who lived in Perugia.  Getting to know the Buitoni family has been an enormously important part of my life, and has allowed me insights into Italy which I would never have achieved as a tourist. My godmother was an expert art historian who taught me about Italian art through visits to churches and museums; she also knew a great deal about classical music and established a concert programme in Perugia which continues to flourish, the Amici della Musica. My first visit to her in 1969 made me a convinced Italophile, and I take every opportunity to visit her children and grandchildren, to explore the cultural riches on offer, and to speak my favourite language. Italy is very far from Victoria, so I am delighted to be able to help students at UVic to improve their Italian and explore this wonderful country - it may be a life-changing experience for them too!  E. Archibald

An award of $1,000 is made to a student who has taken at least one year of Italian Studies at the University of Victoria, achieving a grade point average of 6 or better in all Italian Studies courses taken and is open to students who have had limited opportunities to visit Italy. The award is to be made in the form of a travel voucher and is intended to enable the student to stay in Italy for an extended period. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies.
