Dr. Virginia (Jinny) E. Hayes

Virginia (Jinny) E. Hayes, PhD (UCSF) is Professor Emerita at the University of Victoria School of Nursing. She retired in 2008 as Full Professor with a half-time cross-appointment as Senior Practice Leader for Nursing Research at the Children’s & Women’s Health Centre of British Columbia. Her research program centred on issues for children with chronic conditions and disabilities and their families, both in community and acute care settings, with a particular focus on the family as the unit of analysis.

Over the past 25 years, she conducted externally reviewed and funded research using quantitative, qualitative, and participatory methods, several of which were evaluation projects. From 2003 to 2008, she led an interdisciplinary team that examined the impact of training community-based child health practitioners in early assessment of infants to promote early intervention for neuromotor delays, a project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

At the University of Victoria, Jinny provided leadership as Chair of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, Progression Committee, Research and Scholarly Development Committee, and Consolidated Practice Experiences Coordinator. She also served on many other committees, such as PhD Program Development, Graduate Education, and selection committees (for faculty and students to UVic’s graduate programs). She taught research methodology at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and has supervised, co-supervised, or been a member of 40 master’s and doctoral committees. Past teaching has included courses in group process, consolidated practice experiences, nursing of children with long-term health conditions and families, and family theory. She was honoured to be invited to Botswana, Japan, and Brazil to teach undergraduate and graduate students, consult in research, and present papers. In 2008, she was awarded a CRNBC Award of Distinction in Nursing.

Currently retired and living on Gabriola Island, BC, Jinny is active in community initiatives related to community health and well-being. At the time of writing, she is PI for a proposed COVID-19 rural community response project submitted to the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. She also pursues photography, gardening, and the visual and performing arts, among other interests.
