New Course! NURS 680: Indigenous Health Nursing Approaches to Wellness

NURS 680 is a seminar where students are provided with opportunities to connect with and be mentored by Indigenous healers, helpers and health professionals in a process of critical reflexive and transformative learning.

Jessie Mantle (1932-2021) fondly remembered by UVic School of Nursing Community

Jessie Mantle RN, MN, Post-graduate studies in Gerontological Nursing, passed away on Thursday, September 2, 2021. Described as one of the nursing superstars of her generation, Jessie Mantle is fondly remembered by the UVic School of Nursing community. Her colleagues, many of whom were her former students, recall her significant contributions to practice, education and mentorship over her forty year career. Jessie remained a passionate advocate for the nursing profession and engaged with our faculty until her final days. Prior to her passing, she established the Jessie Mantle Fellowship in Nursing.

CEiNHC at UVic School of Nursing now a JBI Centre of Excellence

The Centre for Evidence-Informed Nursing and Healthcare (CEiNHC) at the University of Victoria, School of Nursing is pleased to announce that we are now a Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Centre of Excellence. The centre began as an affiliated group in 2016 with a focus on evidence synthesis and providing peer reviews of submitted JBI protocols and reports. We began offering the comprehensive JBI training program in 2019. With this new designation, CEiNHC aims to increase production of reviews and seek out new ways to engage with the nursing community to become the hub for evidence where practising nurses and other professionals can turn to find latest evidence to support their practice.

We are delighted and grateful for the new Elta Brown and Peggy Mika Nursing Scholarship

The newest School of Nursing scholarship is inspired by the long friendship and nursing leadership of Elta Brown and Peggy Mika. The Elta Brown and Peggy Mika scholarship will be awarded to outstanding undergraduate students in the School of Nursing who have demonstrated potential to provide leadership within a community or professional role.

Nancy Wright UVic Scholarship in the School of Nursing

A devoted RN, instructor and foundational member of the BC Nurse Practitioner’s Assn, Nancy Wright was part of BC’s nursing family for 30+ years providing primary care to people who struggled with mental health and substance use. Nancy passed away suddenly last year and in her memory husband Jason Easton, family and friends created a UVic Master’s of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner award to assist students in financial need.

New online course offering: NURA 519—Leadership for Health Systems

The NURA 519 course is an elective nursing graduate course. This course is open to undergraduate students*, graduate students, and working professionals who are interested in health leadership or interested in pursuing a graduate degree in nursing. *undergraduate students must be in their final year and meet the specific guidelines listed in the Registration by Undergraduates in Graduate Courses policy.

The rise of the Nurse Practitioner

Sarah Adair, Nurse Practitioner (NP) and UVic graduate with the class of 2019, now works as a Primary Care Provider at the West Shore Primary Care Centre in Colwood. Her first day was January 6, 2020, marking the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. Having invested eleven years of education and work experience to prepare for this role – a four year undergraduate degree completed at UVic, a one year critical care specialty program with BCIT, a two year master’s program with UVic, plus working as an RN in the Emergency Department at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for four years – Adair not only feels ready, she can’t wait to take on full responsibility.

School of nursing hosts Judy Darcy, Canada's first Minister of Mental Health and Addictions

Judy Darcy, B.C. Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, joined student nurses and faculty with UVic’s School of Nursing to share an announcement on campus April 4, 2018 to advance the scope of practice for all Nurse Practitioners in the province to prescribe therapies for those with opioid addiction.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in research design

Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) applies to all fields of research, but not always in the same ways. Join us to learn how EDI can be incorporated into the design of your research, includingplanning, background/literature review, research questions and objectives, methodology, data collection and analysis, as well as impact and dissemination. We'll start with an overview presentation,followed by a panel of UVic researchers who will share how they've implemented EDI in their research designs, with time for Q&A. This session will be useful for researchers from any field.Panelists include:
