Health Information Science - BSc (2019)

Dee Dee Wong is a University of Victoria graduate with a BSc in Health Information Science. Dee Dee discovered the field of Health Informatics while taking an elective course on eHealth, where the topics of Electronic Health Records and Computerized Provider Order Entry sparked her interest in the discipline.

Throughout her degree, Dee Dee had the opportunity to work on several group projects where she was able to participate as both a team player and a leader. Through these projects, Dee Dee further developed her organizational and management skills, which created a strong foundation for success for her future career path. As a part of the Health Informatics program, Dee Dee completed a co-op term as a Business Systems Analyst where she was able to make a positive impact in the health care system by assisting with the upgrade of the Electronic Locating System (ELS) at Surrey Memorial Hospital to improve the accuracy of locating equipment within the hospital. Currently, Dee Dee is continuing her education by pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Health at the University of Alberta, where she hopes to combine her Health Informatics experience with Public Health and head into the Surveillance Epidemiology or Public Health Informatics fields.

Some advice Dee Dee would offer to students interested in studying Health Informatics is to reach out to students in other years of the program to ask about their experiences, as well as to connect with faculty to utilize their support. Dee Dee says that the “HINF program is accommodating to students that come from different years and circumstances,” and emphasizes the importance of making connections both within the program and the Health Informatics industry.
