Computer engineering program

New BENG-CENG program effective September 2026

  • ECE 260 Continuous-Time Signals and Systems is replaced with ECE 265 Continuous-Time and Discrete-Time Signals and Systems.
  • Required ECE 220 Electrical Properties of Materials is replaced with a choice of 1 out of 3 Prescribed Electives (ECE 220 Electrical Properties of Materials, SENG 275 Software Testing, CSC 225 Algorithms and Data Structures I).
  • Required ECE 300 Linear Circuits II and ECE 310 Digital Signal Processing I are replaced with required ECE 311 Foundations of Machine Learning and ECE 360 Control Theory and Systems I.
  • In the third year, the choice of 2 out of 5 technical courses (ECE 320 Electronic Devices I, ECE 330 Electronic Circuits I, ECE 350 Communications Theory and Systems I, ECE 360 Control Theory and Systems I, ECE 370 Electromechanical Energy Conversion) is replaced with a choice of 3 out of 10 prescribed electives (CSC 370 Database Systems, ECE 300 Linear Circuits II, ECE 315 Intermediate Signal Processing, ECE 320 Electronic Devices I, ECE 330 Electronic Circuits I, ECE 335 Biosensors and Instrumentation, ECE 340 Applied Electromagnetics and Photonics, ECE 350 Communications Theory and Systems I, ECE 370 Electromechanical Energy Conversion, SENG 321 Requirements Engineering).

This new program is designed to give students earlier access to digital signal processing and machine learning skills, and to provide more course choices in the second and third years of study.

Notes

  1. ECE 299 is a prerequisite for ECE 399.
  2. The Computer Engineering program requirements for these selections are that students must complete 3 out of 10 prescribed electives (ECE 300, ECE 315, ECE 320, ECE 330, ECE 335, ECE 340, ECE 350, ECE 370, SENG 321, CSC 370), STAT 254 or STAT 260, and 1 natural science elective.
  3. ECE 399 is a prerequisite for ECE 499. ECE 399 Design Project I is a team-based technical project complemented with lectures on design and guest speakers on a variety of topics relevant to a professional engineer. This project may be linked to ECE 499 Design Project II.
  4. ECON 180 is normally offered in the summer and fall terms. The summer offering may be a condensed offering from May to June.
  5. Six technical electives are required, selected from the list of technical electives. These electives may also include CSC 349A Numerical Analysis. At most, 1 300-level course can be taken for credit towards technical electives, provided that this course has not already been taken as a selection from the third-year prescribed electives list. Bridge students from Camosun must take 2 technical electives from the special bridge student's elective list, excluding ECE 363, ECE 441, ECE 449, and ECE 455 that are compulsory courses in the Computer Engineering program.
  6. Students normally take ENGR 446 in the term preceding the final term of their academic program (academic or work term).

Technical electives & ECE specializations

Specializations are optional. The program requires completion of 6 technical electives (9.0 units) to be chosen from the list of technical electives categorized by specialization. Students who complete 3 courses (4.5 units) from a category can request a specialization letter from the Electrical and Computer Engineering office. The specialization area will not be shown on the transcript.

Students who entered the program via a bridge program must take at least 2 courses (i.e., 3.0 units) from the special bridge students' elective list.

Check the academic schedule - ECE technical elective courses on when technical electives are normally offered. Note that some courses appear under more than 1 category. Not all technical electives are offered every year.

Other 400-level or graduate courses may be considered as technical electives with the permission of the department and Dean of Graduate Studies as required (refer to "registration in graduate courses by undergraduates" in the Calendar).

  1. ECE 260 Continuous-Time Signals and Systems will not be offered after the Summer 2026 term. Students needing this course will be able to take ECE 265 Continuous-Time and Discrete-Time Signals and Systems in its place.
  2. ECE 299 is a prerequisite for ECE 399.
  3. ECE 310 Digital Signal Processing I will not be offered after the Spring 2027 term. Students needing this course will be able to take ECE 315 Intermediate Signal Processing in its place. This course will be offered for the first time in Spring 2028.
