The Department of Indigenous Education at UVic is Canada's most distinctive in offering Indigenous Language Revitalization and teacher education. Our work spans graduate and undergraduate study, community-based language programs delivered across BC and beyond, and teacher education that equips both Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators to bring Indigenous perspectives forward to serve all students.

None of this happens without sustained support. Donor funding makes it possible for community members to pursue graduate study without leaving home. It enables land-based and experiential learning that can't be funded through tuition alone. It supports teacher candidates from Indigenous communities who are changing the face of classrooms across BC. And, it funds the research and resources that communities can use for generations.

Graduate programs in Indigenous Language Revitalization

Canada's only graduate program of its kind, the Master's in Indigenous Language Revitalization, prepares community leaders to lead language recovery through rigorous scholarship and community-based practice. Donor support funds student awards and bursaries that make graduate study accessible to language activists who can't leave their communities.

Community-based language programs

From the W̲SÁNEĆ territory to Iqaluit, UVic delivers certificate, diploma, and degree programs in partnership with Indigenous nations and communities across BC and Nunavut. Indigenous languages carry generations of knowledge, spiritual tradition, and ways of understanding the world around us.

IED's community-based Indigenous language revitalization programs train speakers where the language lives; in community and on the land. Every word spoken, every song remembered, and every teaching shared is a step toward restoring balance and building a future rooted in Indigenous strength and cultural continuity.

The next decade is critical. Many Indigenous languages in BC have only a handful of fluent speakers left. A gift to Indigenous language revitalization helps remove barriers to entry and mentors a new generation of language speakers to carry on this critical legacy.

Indigenous teacher education

The B.Ed Indigenous Post-Degree Professional Program, Summer Institute, and Teaching and Learning Indigenous Perspectives electives prepare both Indigenous and non-Indigenous teachers to bring Indigenous perspectives, histories, and knowledge systems into K–12 classrooms. 

We envision a future where every teacher understands Indigenous worldviews, histories, and pedagogies. Your gift expands access to Indigenous teacher education pathways and supports culturally grounded, land-based, and experiential learning. Each teacher you help train will reach thousands of students over their career, putting reconciliation into action.

Student awards & bursaries

Many of our students are community leaders, parents, and professionals who carry significant responsibilities beyond their studies. Financial support at any level can be the difference between completing a program and stepping away.

Research & community resources

Faculty research in Indigenous language revitalization, pedagogy and education policy generates tools like curricula, recordings, reference materials and publications that communities can use long after a program ends. Gifts to research amplify impact far beyond the university.
